Calvin Taylor was a Master Trooper in the North Carolina Highway Patrol, a Mason and a man dedicated to his family and the betterment of his community. Calvin was killed in the line of duty on October 3, 2001. One of the things Calvin noticed during his daily duties at the scene of many accidents was the need to have toys on hand to comfort the younger victims involved. This need was felt by all Emergency Response Personnel, as well as by the Emergency Room staffs, of the area hospitals. In answer to this need, Calvin, who was also a Master Mason, got together with some fellow troopers and members of his Lodge and began the Toy Ride to start addressing this need in our area. Sadly, Calvin did not get to participate in the actual Ride of 2001, as it was held on the day of his funeral.

Start Times & Places:

On October 11th, we will be drawing the name of the winner of our second referral contest of the year. The prize that you voted most for was the iPad 2. However we have decided that since the vote for the iPad 2 was not a complete landslide, we would give the winner of the referral contest a choice of three items.

• Apple iPad 2
• Dollywood & Dixie Stampede 3 Day/2Nights for 2
• Enmark – $500 Gift Card

Continue to read for more contest information:
If the information we receive is a qualified referral, you will get THREE entries into the drawing that will take place on Monday, October 11th, 2011.

How does a referral become a qualified referral?:

The person you refer fills out the form and electronically authorizes Stanberry Insurance to contact them
Stanberry Insurance is able to contact the referral and complete a quote
The referral has not had a personal insurance policy with Stanberry Insurance within the prior 365 days
Here are some frequently asked questions (updated 6/3/11):

•If you have your personal insurance with us and you refer your business, life, or health insurance

Q: Does the person I refer to you have to buy the policy you quote for them?
→A: No.

Q: How many times will you attempt to contact the person I refer to you?

Jackson County’s Relay for Life concluded on Saturday, June 5 with closing ceremonies at 6:00 am. Over 30 teams participated from the Jackson County community this year raising a whopping $65,000 for the county which goes toward research and providing services to those facing cancer. “Lights, Camera, Cure!” drew 1500 participants from all over Western North Carolina, becoming Jackson County’s largest Relay event to date, a great achievement for this organization.

Stanberry Insurance Agency raised $2,200, overwhelmingly reaching the original goal of $1,000. Through hard work and dedication, the Stanberry team held a profitable yard sale earlier in the spring to raise money as well as teaming up with O’Malleys Pub and Grill for a percentage night. To continue fundraising at the event, our team sold Root Beer and Coke Floats as well as a few hamburger meals.

Throughout the evening and into the early morning hours, team members walked the track which was lighted by luminaries to honor and remember those who have battled cancer. A deejay provided entertainment those wee morning hours to keep the crowds spirited and to energize the tiring walkers. Stanberry had four team members who camped out at the event and walked all night long—even through a light drizzle of rain!

Stanberry Insurance Agency is honored to be part of such a wonderful cause. Not only was the event a great opportunity for the community to come together and have some fun but it was for a great organization that fights to save lives every day! Stanberry will continue to help fight cancer by participating in the American Cancer Society’s Relay for Life for years to come.

Everything is in full bloom this Spring in Western North Carolina creating a lot of buzz about “things to do”. There are many festivals and activities in full swing here from bike rallies to art tours. If you live in the mountains, you know this is a place buzzing with fun. If you are planning to visit WNC, you will be surprised by the shear amount and diversity of amusements.

Spring travel in the mountains offers stunning flowers bursting with color, as well as countless ways to experience a healthy getaway to rejuvenate and shed those extra winter pounds. A few calories burning activities could include a hike to Devil’s Courthouse on the Blue Ridge Parkway or sightseeing in a quaint village like Dillsboro. Scenic drives are a wonderful way to experience the majesty from the highest peak east of the Mississippi, to see flowers actually go from buds to blooms, or drive to an authentic spa town with hot spring waters.

If flowers are your passion, think about checking out the 25th Annual Festival of Flowers at Biltmore Estate. More than 100,000 tulips will kick off the start of the festival which begins in April and runs through May. The stunning floral display sprawls across the estate and celebrates the 25th anniversary of the festival. Expect live music daily in the garden house and conservatory, with daily seminars offered. The restaurants feature special menu items, drinks and desserts, with the Winery offering a commemorative Festival of Flowers wine, wine programs, and children’s activities on the weekends.

The 2010 French Broad River Festival is an annual festival has grown steadily from a one night benefit party on the banks of the French Broad to an all weekend family festival featuring some of the best music in the area and a number of outdoor events in celebration of this beautiful river and setting. The 13th annual festival is set for April 30 – May 2, 2019 where the French Broad River meets the Appalachian Trail at the beautiful Hot Springs Campground & Spa (www.camp.nchotsprings.com ). Festival begins at 4:00 on Friday, April 30 and ends Sunday, May 2. Visit our website www.frenchbroadriverfestival.com for details or call 828-253-1240. Proceeds from the festival will be donated to American Whitewater and the new Hot Springs Community Learning Center.

Saturdays in Waynesville beginning at the end of May kick off the BLOCK PARTY or Downtown is Alive at Night with live music and dancing. Eats and treats are offered on the street and restaurants are open. A children’s area near Fun Things, Etc is available to keep the kid’s entertained. On Saturday night’s downtown Waynesville is the place to be.

With 53 miles of track, 2 tunnels and 25 bridges, the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad offers a variety of excursions that explore the amazing landscape of Western North Carolina. With the romance and mystique of an era gone by, guests on-board the Great Smoky Mountains Railroad will enjoy scenic train journeys across fertile valleys and through river gorges in a spectacular region near The Great Smoky Mountains.

There is plenty to do in the mountains of Western North Carolina during the spring months depending on your tastes. You will find something to entertain yourself no matter what you are interested in. We hope you’ll visit us in the beautiful mountains.

The Relay for Life yard sale kicked off without a hitch on Saturday morning. Like many yard sales, the morning begin very early with a bustling of early bird’s hoping to “find the worm” or second-hand treasure in this case.

With tables of clothing, toys, house wares, shoes and other accessories, the folks began lining up to purchase their items with all proceeds benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Among the donated items were delicious baked good such as breads, muffins, brownies, cookies and Rice Krispy Treats donated by the staff. These baked items were a number one with the crowd who enjoyed having a little homemade treat.

The weather was very pleasing with a slightly overcast sky earlier in the day but turning into a brilliant spring day full of sunshine. The weather was absolutely perfect for attending the various yard sales and car washes set up throughout the community on Saturday.

The Stanberry Insurance Relay Team raised a grand total of $462 which will benefit the Relay event in June.

“We were very pleased with the overall success of the yard sale and look forward to contributing this money to a good cause,” said team captain, Heather Hyatt.

Relay for Life will be held at the Jackson County Recreation Center on June 4 beginning at 6:00 pm. For more information on this event and participation, visit our Relay page.

Update…04/21/2010

We have reached 76% of our goal of $1,000 by getting donations in the amount of $758.36 including the yard sale & luminaries as well as the individual donations made on our behalf! Way to go team! Now if we can just earn $250 more our team will have reached it’s goal. Email your friends and family—the smallest donations can make a big difference!
Various organizations within the community such as churches, high school groups and local businesses rally together for a 24 hour event. Our own Stanberry Insurance Agency has been sponsoring the event for many years. This year, Stanberry Insurance Agency has decided to sponsor a team.

We have all been eager to raise money for our team. Everyone has been cleaning out closets and clearing out attics in hopes to find some “treasure” for interested buyers. We’ve collected everything from clothing to books to house wares for the sale. We’re expecting a solid turn out because the weather will be beautiful on Saturday and we know Sylva is a community that is invested in giving back to others.

Today, we all know someone who has been touched by cancer-a family member, a friend, or a co-worker. It feels good to give back to the community as well as help in some way to find a cure for this disease. We are looking forward to a successful fund-raising event as well as the Relay For Life event on June 4. Stanberry Insurance Agency is committed to help fight cancer!

Stanberry Insurance Agency is proud to announce the formation of our own Relay for Life team in Jackson County, North Carolina. The event will take place on June 4, 2010 at the Jackson County Recreation Center. Our company has been proudly sponsoring the event for years but this year seemed like the perfect opportunity to participate!

Relay For Life is a life-changing event that gives everyone in communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease. At Relay, teams of people camp out at a local high school, park, or fairground and take turns walking or running around a track or path. Each team is asked to have a representative on the track at all times during the event. Because cancer never sleeps, Relays are overnight events up to 24 hours in length.

There are several traditions held at the event. The Survivor’s Lap kicks off the relay event and is an inspirational time when survivors are invited to circle the track together and help everyone celebrate the victories achieved over cancer. The Survivors Lap is an emotional example of how Relay participants are creating a world with more birthdays like those of each individual on the track.

After dark, we honor people who have been touched by cancer and remember loved ones lost to the disease during the Luminaria Ceremony. Candles are lit inside bags filled with sand, each one bearing the name of a person touched by cancer, and participants often walk a lap in silence.

Last, there is a Fight Back Ceremony, where we make a personal commitment to save lives by taking up the fight against cancer.

Cancer touches so many people. From loved ones to co-workers, neighbors and friends-everyone knows someone who has been diagnosed with cancer. No matter where you are, there’s a place for you at Relay and you can make a difference today by signing up online to start your own team or by simply making a donation. We will be glad to have you as part of our Stanberry Insurance Agency team!
